Sigurdardóttir May Become Iceland's New PM
Here is an interesting piece of news, cheering to those of us interested in gay & lesbian upward mobility world-wide:
The current Minister for Social Affairs, Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir of the Social Democrats, said she is prepared to assume the position of prime minister as long as she senses that her position is backed by sufficient trust.
Foreign Minister and chairwoman of the Social Democrats Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir proposed that Sigurdardóttir replace Geir H. Haarde, chairman of the Independence Party, as prime minister yesterday, Fréttabladid reports.
[…]
If Sigurdardóttir does become prime minister, she will be the first woman to serve as prime minister in the country’s history and also the first openly gay prime minister in the world.["Sigurdardóttir Ready to Become Iceland's PM", Iceland Review Online, 27 January 2009. I found it reassuring that the news of Sigurdardóttir's potential firsts only were mentioned in the final paragraph of the story.

It is good that the woman's orientation wasn't sensationalized. I'm
afraid if it was a U.S. news story, that would've been front and center,
along with comment from some political and/or religious figure who
disapproves. As if her orientation is everyone's business and somehow
indicates the likelihood of her being a good or poor leader.

All I saw was some cleavage, and then a story telling me I have no chance. Thanks a lot.

Fred, I know you believe you'd never find lasting happiness (or even short-term happiness) with a woman described using the "L"-word, but–hey!–maybe you should give a Liberal a try sometime, it might work for you!
SW, that was my reaction, but perhaps the day will come when we have the same blase reaction from our own extremists who, no longer getting a rise out of people over the thought of lesbians in power, will have moved on to something else they can get hysterical about.

Indeed "has now become", as of a week ago if I'm following the calendar with any precision. She has started off with favorable reviews, too. I hope for the best, feeling well positioned since this is now the first time ever that I'm aware of–and can even spell–the name of the prime minister of Iceland.
